One Day this’ll be a regular thing…

July 19, 2011

After a long, at times wonderful, and not entirely expected long time away, it brings me great pleasure and joy (and all other sorts of tingly feelings) to say again…

HELLO ANIMALS!!!

WE’RE BACK! (this isn’t becoming a habit is it?)

We promise not to do this...well...unless you really want us to...maybe...

The real answers for why we haven’t been around much lately (besides working on our album) can fall squarely on my shoulders. And don’t worry, animals, it’s reasons of the good, great, and awesome variety: In June, I was married to the most wonderful woman in the world!

The rings of the newlyweds on the honeymoon

Now what’s everyone else been doing these days instead of playing shows???

Nick & Rory have been getting foot burn & school on respectively:

Exactly like this...

Pete has steadily been working in his laboratory:

...keeps the awesome from leaking out...

And Jeff??? What about our drummer? The Sentinel of Shirtlessness:

We'd like to think he's saving up for this...

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHEN IS CITY ZOO PLAYING AGAIN!!!

Woah, woah, woah, there! Easy lightnin'...

CITY ZOO

Rub a dub dubs…

February 4, 2011

Welcome back, animals!

The winter has us in full grips and we’re chompin’ at the bit to play in some snow…if it ever gets this far south!!!

1st thing’s first: We played a show at Banks St. with The Mumbles a couple of weeks ago and Nick’s girlfriend Rachel got a few shots and a vid. She put the vid up on facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10100219286659805

It’s a little dark and it cuts out during the solo, but you get the idea. Andy still hasn’t gotten us that vid he took of Eventually the last time we were there…Mr. Smith??? We’ll show it to you one day. Here’s a panoramic view:

We also double as the 2nd line for the Hornets on weekends...you can see the support in the crowd!

And speaking of Facebook…if you haven’t joined us there, here you go!!!

IN OTHER NEWS…

Hey, Scott! I thought you guys were working on an album!!!

As a matter of fact, avid animals, you’re right! What seems like an eternity ago back in September & October, we laid down rhythm tracks for 10 songs. I posted a blog or two on the subject. Well anyway, with shows, other bands, graduate schools, work, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, comedies, and tragedies, we really have just gotten around to getting all 5 of us in the same room with the purpose for listening to and figuring out logistics for all this shit.

See, it's not a myth...

The good news: We’re keeping 6&1/2 of the original rhythm tracks and started work on overdubs this week.

The bad news: We’ve decided to re-record 3 & 1/2 songs. And we’re also planning out recording 3 more.

Now that’s not to say that all these tracks will be on the above album (we still have no clue what to call it.)

We're open to suggestions...

But hey, these things take time. We all have jobs or school and a hell of a lot of other things going on as well…As the saying goes, it’ll get there…Eventually. Get it? See what I did there? Using the lyric…ha ha…ummm. Ok then, you get the idea.

But seriously, we are working on it...

But what do we do in the meantime, Scott, while we’re waiting for the release of this monumental extravaganza of ear candy???

Well, animals, there’s all sorts of things…A lot revolving around Rory, actually.

Rory item 1: Besides filling the position of demigod in City Zoo, he also serves the same capacity in a band you may have heard of (…drumroll…) Vox and the Hound. If you haven’t heard, they have their 1st EP out: Hermosa you can pick it up for $5 online or at one of their shows in an awesomely flannel package (I’ve seen it. It is awesome).

Rory item 2: In addition to filling the demigod role in both City Zoo & Vox and the Hound, he also launches into full blown god mode with his own band, The Green Genes. They also have a recording project under way, Dial D for Demo. You’ll be able to bolster your music collection by one song per month gratis (as in straight free, y’all.)!

Now it’s not about Rory all the time…Our very own drummer, “Shirtless” Jeff Pennison, will be playing live with his band Big Fat and Delicious at Banks St. Bar on February 11th!!! As always, Banks St. Shows start at 10pm and are FREE!!!

Now I know you rabid animals are begging the question, “When, o’ when do we get some City Zoo action, Scott???”

Well we have the fix for all your cravings right here:

FEBRUARY 17TH UPSTAIRS AT THE MAISON: 508 FRENCHMEN

TOAST BEARDS, CITY ZOO, & NEVER EVER AND THE FAMILY BAND!!!

The shindig goes down at 10pm so get yourselves a sweet parking spot and head down!!!

‘Til next time, animals

Did I mention this was my 50th blog post here??? Much love to everyone who’s been following this whole time. We all appreciate you so much! Thank you from the cockles of our hearts…

Post Shows & New Shows

August 8, 2010

First off, let me start by saying it’s mighty damn awesome to have football back! I really can’t wait for the whole world to refer to the New Orleans Saints as “Defending Champions” for an entire season. It’s so good to say that. But anyway, we have some news to report.

Last week, we played Upstairs at The Maison w/ LOVEHOG and THE SWIP. We all had such a damn good time, I’m sure we’ll be doing that lineup again in the future. Thanks to all the wonderful people who came out to the show – without you guys, it’s no where near as much fun! Here’s a few of shots from the show!

All of us in our sweaty glory.

Rory doing badass things to that guitar...

Jeff behind the kit...shirtless.

Nick & Pete, being Rock Gods...

Thank you Kate Barkmann for taking the photos!!!

That does it for the post show stuff. Now we have some new shows to announce:

September 3rdONE EYED JACKS! We’re opening for GIVERS & CADDYWHOMPUS. The whole shindig starts at 10 so get there early to catch us!

September 4thBAYOU PARK BAR! We’ll be playing with THE GREEN GENES and AUTOMATIC MEN.

This will be a huge-ass Labor Day Weekend Rock Extravaganza! We look forward to seeing each and everyone of you at both shows for a 2 day long party! Don’t worry, you’ll have Sunday and Monday to recover! Look for more updates soon (us cutting an EP/Album…who knows???)!!!

See you guys around…

We know how to end your month!

July 15, 2010

So it’s been a little while, Zoo patrons.  A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to celebrate my birthday with the guys in the band and a few of our friends. We played a little acoustic set @ the Neutral Ground where we were accosted by a giant octopus made of cake!

Somewhat acoustic....

We want to thank everyone who came out and made the whole night a hell of a lot of fun!

Fast forward a few weeks...

With it being summer and all, laziness sets in and many cases of wonderlust gets fixed with a little bit of travel.

If this isn't a reason to travel, I don't know what is.

While I’ve been traveling, Rory’s been the mad-busy guitar god we all know and love, with The Green Genes and Vox and the Hound. If I ever manage to finish shooting the footage and getting that elusive interview with Ro, you should get a yours truly edited, quasi-doc on the “Greenies” before the summer ends.

The Green Genes - the Movie (Sort of...)

Meanwhile, Pete’s been polishing his recording chops, Jeff’s been reportedly spotted in the vicinity of Banks St. Bar, and Nick’s been involved in an intense hostage crisis with a bottle crown & his guitar.

This time we're serious...

Well the thing that’s certain, is we have a show on July 31st. We’re playing upstairs at The Maison w/ The Swip and Lovehog. It’s FREE! It’s at 10. Want proof?

Wouldn't have made it if it weren't true!

So I know there’s people that get paid at the end of the month, and it just so happens that it’s a Saturday night. It just so happens that we’ll be playing this glorious rock show on Frenchmen Street. AND IT’S FREE!!!! This way, most of your financial attention can be given to the consumption of various alcoholic beverages! But seriously, we’d love you to come down and have a blast!

‘Til next time,

The Power/Cost of Sleep

January 6, 2010

So I’ve been snoring over the past few years. A lot. So much so that Nick has heard me through concrete walls. So much so that my girlfriend has been driven to the other bedroom. So much so that I wake up some mornings and I wince from the severe pain in my throat.

Granted, this has probably been going on longer than I’ve thought. But in my early 20′s I distinctly remember being told I didn’t snore – I just grind my teeth a lot. I guess once one starts, the other follows? Who knows?

So purely out of a desire to sleep soundly with my girlfriend & save what’s left of my throat, I went here:

'Nuff said. Just screams restful, doesn't it?

So I was told to go to the Sleep Center by my doctor to be checked for Sleep Apnea among other things. What is Sleep Apnea? Well my understanding of it is that for us mouth breathers (at least when we sleep – I’m a nose breather in my waking hours). The throat becomes blocked or collapsed in some way, causing one to wake themselves up out of a sleep. Things that happen because of this? Snoring, High Blood Pressure, Memory Loss (Is this why remembering lyrics has been a pain in the ass lately?), and weight gain. And here I thought it was because of the cold weather and the holidays. According to my doctor, there’s a few ways snoring and/or Sleep Apnea can be treated. Medicine, Breathing Masks, or Surgery (A scary thought having never really been under the knife).

So I really have no idea what to expect other than someone is going to watch me sleep and hook me up to a monitor of some kind…Little did I know…

Before I go any further, I need to say that I woke up late yesterday, around 11am. Getting there at 7:30pm, I really didn’t feel like sleeping. I tried to wear myself out by running an extra half mile or so (3.6 miles in 42 minutes actually.) and reading to make my eyes tired.

So I get there last night around 7:30 (In case you’re wondering, I’m a punctual one.) And they showed me to a bedroom lit up by florescent lights. Not exactly conducive to sleeping really. But I got into my comfy pj pants and tried to relax. Before I got into the bed to flick on the Orange Bowl Game I noticed these things:

Heres one view of the wires and pads

Yet more wires above

Trying to calm myself down, I turned off the volume of the TV in the room and began to read my Pirate book. Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton. His last book, I’m guessing. The sleeve says they found the complete manuscript in his files after his death in 2008. It’s a fun read. A little short on detail at moments, but I’m guessing that it probably wasn’t exactly finished.

The nurse came into the room to brief me on what she’s going to hook me up to – which was all those wires and pads that were lying there. I was also going to be monitored by camera and microphone all through the night. That’s just a little weird. Then she went about giving me a 20 minute questionnaire based on my sleep patterns, drinking patterns, health issues, etc. It was during this question/answer session it dawned on me that it’s been a year since I quit smoking (Go me!). Once all the questions were answered and forms signed, she left for me to get relaxed and ready for bed and she would return to hook me up.

She came back about 15 minutes later and did this:

The things I do for love...

The things I do for music...

So once all these things are hooked up to me, I’m now expected to sleep. There’s even stuff attached to my legs! So around 10/10:30pm it’s lights out and time to sleep. Right before the lights turn out, there’s one more thing hooked up to me: A simple pulse monitor on my index finger. You ever feel your own pulse through your body? This little pulse monitor, in addition to glowing red, caused me to feel my whole arm up to the shoulder pulsate. Those little straps snugly fit across my chest & stomach? I feel my pulse in my whole torso from that. I don’t know if its claustrophobia from being hooked up to all those wires or what but every beat of my pulse I felt the entire night.

They tell you to sleep normally. I usually move around when I sleep. Sometimes I sleep on half of my face and stomach, holding onto a pillow. Other times I sleep on my side, other times on my back, which I’m guessing is where most of the snoring comes from. HOW THE HELL CAN THEY EXPECT YOU TO SLEEP NORMALLY WHEN ALL THIS STUFF IS ATTACHED TO YOU?!?

Most of those wires were coming out of my face & head. The rest out of my chest and legs.

But I tried (Oh my god, how I tried) to sleep. I laid there in the dark. Hours went by. The room got warmer. The room got dryer. My lips began to crack, my throat needed water. Fortunately I had asked for some earlier. Even drinking water did nothing for the dryness of this room. Blowing my nose produced blood. There was really no way in hell possible for me to sleep short of swallowing pills. No one offered, so I assumed they wanted you to get natural sleep. But I tried to sleep. I really tried. The nurse even said the guy in the room next to me went out like a light.

Next there were the wires in my head.  I’d turn, they’d pop out of the pad. I’d toss, they’d pop out of the pad. I’d almost get to sleep, you guessed it – they’d come out. These wires coming out meant within 5 minutes the nurse would come into the room, letting the blinding light of the florescent hallway into the room. Of course this woke me right up. I finally got up near 1am and turned on a lamp to read.

After immersing myself in Pirate voyages for about an hour, I made another attempt to sleep. After what seemed like an eternity of almost fading and them popping a wire and then being woken up to have it replaced. I got to sleep! Sweet glorious sleep! About 30 minutes later it was 5:30am and time to go. Basically, I went to a sleep study and didn’t sleep. The nurse then tells me, “I don’t know what your girlfriend is complaining about. You didn’t snore.”

Great. The whole reason for me going is to find out why I snore and when I get tested I don’t. I’m in a shitty mood. I haven’t slept. I have to go back to work tomorrow. I’m not thrilled at all about the results of the evening. However, I know I have to stop snoring. I assume I’m going to have to go back and do all this again. If it means that I won’t keep my girlfriend up or tear up my throat, I’ll keep doing the sleep study until there’s something that can be done about my snoring. I just hope I actually sleep next time because this no sleep thing sucks!

Also, don’t forget to see us Friday night, where I won’t be snoring or sleeping @ Dockside’s lounge with The War Office!

Don’t forget, we’re looking for fan photos of shows or you guys enjoying them! Send them to cityzooband@gmail.com

‘Til next time,

ST from CZ

Last Night…

January 2, 2010

First off, we want to thank everyone for coming out last night to Banks Street Bar. It was a pretty damn cool show & a place we’d love to play more often. Also major thanks go to The War Office & The Parishoners for rockin’ out such damn fine sets!

This year I’d like to try something. The last several shows I’ve noticed people taking pictures. Some get posted on Facebook & others end up in other places. What I’d like to do is see if we can get you guys to send any fan pics to us! It can be pictures of our live performances or you guys at the bars enjoying the show! We’ll post the good ones that aren’t too nasty! (Or maybe we will, who knows?)

So if any of you guys have pics you’d like to share with the band/the site/the world. Send them on to cityzooband@gmail.com. We’d love to see what you have!

Hope everyone had an awesome and safe New Year. And we hope you come check us out at our next show on January 8th @ Dockside’s Lounge w/ The War Office!
